Nigeria’s 8th National Assembly is set to be inaugurated today.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives with 64 out of 109 Senatorial seats and 214 out of 360 Reps’ seats.
Thus, the leadership of the Assembly; Senate President and Speaker, will come from the APC.
The choice of leaders has thrown the APC into crisis after the party chose Femi Gbajabiamila for the position of Speaker and Senator Ahmad Lawan for the position of Senate President.
This however didn’t sit right with co-contestants Senator Bukola Saraki and Reps member, Yakubu Dogara, who are co-contestants in the race.
Saraki and Dogara intend to proceed with their candidacy and expect to garner most of their votes from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers.
The PDP has adopted both candidates as its choice for the Assembly leadership.
Meanwhile, according to Punch, security has been heightened at the National Assembly complex in preparation for the inauguration.
