Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has also reacted to the invasion of the residence of several senior judges by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Speaking on Sunday, October 9, Melaye opined that he has no doubt that “many judges are corrupt”, but insisted that the DSS acted outside its powers.
He said DSS’s action was “absolutely wrong”, as a study of the act setting it up showed that it acted outside its core mandate.
“The invasion of Judges residences by the DSS is totally wrong and not acceptable,” he said.
“I have studied the ACT setting up DSS,NIA and DIA and can conclude that the DSS operated outside their core mandate. There is no doubt that many Judges are corrupt. It is also important to state the need to sanitise the judiciary of corruption that makes judges give commercial rulings that create terrible precedence in our legal system.
“Judges have no immunity and can be tried and should be tried but the use of DSS is absolutely wrong. The DSS, even when they overstretch themselves and conduct investigations on the judges, they ought to hand over their findings to the appropriate institution of government i.e the police or National Judicial Council, for prosecution and punishment.
“The rule of law is a core value of governance and therefore must be guided jealousy. Prosecution of civil and corrupt cases in not the responsibility of DSS. Internal security is the main stay of the DSS and they should stick to that. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigerian.”
