Nigerian Senate
The Upper chamber of the National Assembly on Thursday successfully wrested the powers of control of the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Tribunal from the Presidency following its amendment of the agency’s establishment Act.
There was, however, a mild drama at the Senate as the Upper chamber of the National Assembly during the process of considering the report of its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on the Code of Conduct Act Amendment Bill.
The consideration of the report started after the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, moved a motion that the Senate do dissolve to committee of the whole to consider the report.
The motion was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader, Philip Aduda, and the consideration of the report commenced.
As the consideration was ongoing, there was a move by Senators Ahmed Lawal, Banabas Gemade and Abdullahi Yahaya for the Senate to suspend the consideration of the report.
The development forced the Senate leader to move another motion for the consideration of the report to be suspended after clauses 1-8 had been considered.
The motion of the Senate leader was seconded by Senator Banabas Gemade.
When the motion was put into vote by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the sitting, it was rejected by majority of the Senators present at the sitting.
The lawmakers then continued with the consideration of the report and finally amended the Act.
