Pit bulls get a bad reputation, with many thinking they’re needlessly aggressive. Most of the time, though, these pups are kind and sweet — unless their owner is being attacked. A pit bull in Brooklyn showed his aggressive side recently, and his humans are thanking him.
The New York Post reports 18-year-old Maya Fairweather was taking her boyfriend’s 5-month-old pit bull, Apollo, for a walk in Brooklyn around 10 p.m. When she reached a park, Maya let Apollo of his leash to run around, which turned out to be the thing that might have saved her life.
The Post reports Maya was listening to music in her headphones when a man came up behind her and ripped her headphones out. She thought it was her boyfriend, so Maya turned around, but it was a stranger who began attacking her, ripping at her pants. That’s when Apollo saved the day.
The pup latched on to the attacker’s leg, distracting him enough that Maya could run away and get help. Her attacker eventually fled, but Maya told the Post she doesn’t think she would have gotten away without Apollo.
“He was protective,” she said. “I think it would’ve been a lot worse. I wouldn’t have been so lucky.”
Maya said she believes the dog saved her life, but she’s surprised Apollo leaped into action the way he did. Maya told the Post the pup is usually very sweet and gentle. The attack, she said, is totally out of character.
“He is a sweet dog. I never thought he would bite anyone. He never bit anyone before. He’s usually very friendly and just jumps on everyone,” she said.
Apollo is definitely a hero in this situation. His attack probably had nothing to do with the fact that he is a pit bull, and everything to do with the fact that he saw his owner in trouble. They say dogs are man’s best friend, but Apollo proved he’s a woman’s best friend too.
