Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa popularly known as Flora Nwapa is regarded as the ‘mother of modern African literature’.She is acknowledged as the first African woman novelist to be published in the English language in Britain and achieve international recognition with her first novel Efuru being published in 1966 by Heinemann Educational Books.
On the other hand, the world’s biggest search engine, Google honored the reluctant feminist by creating a special doddle to celebrate her 86th Birthday which Nigerian users are greeted with when visiting the Google domain.
Flora Nwapa died from pneumonia on the 16th of October 1993 in hospital in Enugu, Nigeria, at the age of 62. Until her death, she was a visiting professor and lecturer in numerous citadel of learning.
