Jose Mourinho says that he jokingly told Sir Alex Ferguson that he had done “some work for him” by winning the Europa League.
Manchester United completed their set of trophies by claiming Europe’s secondary competition on Wednesday in a comfortable final against Ajax.
Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored as United sauntered to glory in Stockholm, qualifying for the Champions League as a result.
It was the last remaining trophy United had failed to win throughout their history until Wednesday, and Mourinho was quick to point that out to Ferguson.
“I joked with Sir Alex telling him I did some work for him, because now we have all the European trophies and I won the only one he missed,” he told Sky Italia.
The victory, and subsequent qualification for the Champions League, is expected to pave the way for Antoine Griezmann to arrive at Old Trafford within the next few weeks.
The Frenchman rated his chances of moving to Old Trafford as “six out of ten” in an interview earlier this week , but he is far more likely to move now United are back among the elite.
Mourinho was asked about a potential transfer for the 26-year-old after the final, and replied: “I do not want to talk about Griezmann because that would be disrespectful to his club, Atletico.
“Just how I do not like others talking about by my players, I’m not going to talk about Antoine either.”
