The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has delayed, for over TWO hours, his scheduled briefing of the press on the postponement of the country’s general elections.
The delay has raised fears within the hierarchy of the Commission that Jega may be considering resignation.
As at 7:12pm when this report was filed on Saturday, the seat of Jega, a stickler for time, was still vacant at the venue of the scheduled press conference.
Jega is said to be displeased about the outcome of the consultation with the political parties and civil society.
He had consistently said the
Commission was set for the general election and that there was no need to postpone the polls.
However, the country’s service chiefs were said to have written Jega to say that they could not provide security for the election as their focus was crushing the Boko Haram sect.
Newsmen were still at the venue of the conference as at the time of filing this report.!
