Napoli’s quest for their first Serie A title in over three decades received a huge boost on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Roma. Star forward Victor Osimhen was the standout performer for the home side, putting in a match-winning display that helped propel his team to a crucial three points.
In the 17th minute, Osimhen displayed his incredible talent in front of goal when he beautifully controlled a cross from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before unleashing a stunning volley into the back of the net. This spectacular strike was the 14th league goal of the season for the Nigerian forward and is a strong contender for one of the best goals of the year.
Despite a valiant effort from Roma, they found themselves trailing 1-0 until the 75th minute when Stephan El Shaarawy equalized for the visitors. However, their joy was short-lived as substitute Giovanni Simeone came off the bench four minutes later to fire home a fantastic finish and secure the win for Napoli. Simeone’s fifth goal of the season, after coming off the bench, proved to be the decisive moment in a hard-fought contest.
The win extended Napoli’s lead over Inter Milan, the closest challengers, to 13 points and put them in a commanding position in their bid for the Serie A title. The home fans, who have been waiting for 33 years for the Scudetto, erupted in joy and relief at the final whistle after a tough battle with fierce rivals Roma.
“I tried to give everything I had. I did the best thing possible today which was get the winner. I am so happy,” said Simeone after the match.
Despite the off-field drama surrounding want-away star Nicolo Zaniolo, Roma can be proud of their performance, but unfortunately, they leave Naples with nothing to show for it. The Giallorossi are currently sixth in the league, a point behind the Champions League positions and Milan, who were humbled 5-2 by Sassuolo and dropped to fifth place.
