In a shocking turn of events, the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State was set ablaze by unknown gunmen on Tuesday.
This development has raised concerns about the security of electoral materials and the ability of INEC to conduct free, fair and credible elections in the region.
According to Festus Okoye, INEC’s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, the attack resulted in the destruction of a significant amount of electoral materials.
Okoye stated in a statement on Wednesday, that “729 ballot boxes, 243 voting cubicles, 256 election bags, 11 megaphones, one electric power generator were destroyed during the attack. Large quantities of indelible ink and liquid gum were also destroyed in the inferno.”
