Meta’s social media application, Threads, has officially launched in the European Union (EU), marking its expansion into this region after its initial release in the United States and the United Kingdom five months ago.
Threads, conceived by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a competitor to Elon Musk’s platform X (formerly known as Twitter), is designed to provide users with a unique social media experience.
The delay in its availability in the EU is attributed to the region’s stringent regulations concerning data privacy and oversight of major technology companies.
Meta anticipates that the introduction of Threads to the European market will boost interest in the platform.
The app experienced significant initial success, garnering over 10 million users within its first few hours and surpassing 100 million users in its inaugural week.
However, those numbers saw a decline in subsequent weeks.
In a post on Threads, Zuckerberg welcomed users in the European Union, stating, “Today we’re opening Threads to more countries in Europe. Welcome, everyone.”
