The mystery behind Finidi George’s sudden resignation as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles has been uncovered through a letter addressed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Alhaji Shehu Gusau.
The former national team midfielder cited recent changes to the team’s technical crew as the catalyst for his decision to step down from the role.
In the letter seen by Okay.ng dated June 14, Finidi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the senior men’s national team but made it clear that the reshuffling of the technical staff left him with no choice but to vacate his position.
“I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s men’s senior team,” Finidi wrote.
“This decision is in light of the recent decision to effect changes to the team’s technical crew.”
Despite the Super Eagles’ underwhelming performance in recent World Cup qualifying matches, Finidi reiterated his commitment to righting the ship.
“Although our recent results in the qualifying matches were not as desired, I remained committed to getting our World Cup qualification campaign back on track,” he stated.
However, the reshuffling proved to be the final straw.
Finidi expressed his profound gratitude to the NFF leadership, the sports ministry, and the Nigerian people for entrusting him with the prestigious role.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the entire leadership of the federation, the sports ministry, and the people of Nigeria for the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the Super Eagles,” the letter read.
In concluding the letter, Finidi pledged his continued support for the team’s future endeavors, saying, “Please be assured of my continued support for the team, and I wish us all the best for the future.”
