The Nigerian Police have arrested foreign nationals suspected of sponsoring protests with Russian flags in some parts of the country. Police Commissioner Salman Garba announced this after a security meeting with Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on Tuesday.
The arrests come amid the ongoing #Endbadgovernance protests against hardship and hunger, which took a surprising turn on Monday when protesters in some Northern states displayed Russian flags and chanted “Tinubu must go”. The police and other security agencies have vowed to clamp down on anyone threatening the state’s security.
The incident has sparked reactions from human rights activists and senior officials, including Femi Falana and Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Mustapha, who described the act as treasonable. The police have also relaxed the curfew in Kano State from 6 am to 6 pm.
