The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and detained one of its officers who was captured in a viral video abusing the naira, the nation’s currency.
The video, which gained widespread attention on social media, showed the officer holding bundles of money for the sons of Lagos businessman Chief Okoya.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as unethical and contrary to the core values of the police.
“The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of the Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action,” Adejobi said.
“The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police.”
Adejobi further assured the public that the officer would face appropriate disciplinary measures to serve as a deterrent to others.
While the officer has been detained, it remains unclear if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested or taken any action against the primary individuals seen in the video.
