The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended three individuals in connection with an attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 23, when NANS members were attacked while traveling through Ogbese, in Akure North Local Government Area, en route to their annual convention in Abuja.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrests in a statement released in Akure. She stated that the police received a distress call reporting an unprovoked attack by local youths.
According to Odunlami, police officers responded quickly to the scene, restoring order and ensuring the safety of the students. An immediate investigation was launched to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
“Intelligence gathered indicated that this was not the first instance of NANS members being targeted in the Ogbese community,” Odunlami said. “Through intelligence-led policing, our special squad successfully arrested three suspects.”
Commissioner of Police (CP), Wilfred Afolabi, assured NANS that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to uncover the full circumstances of the attack and bring all those involved to justice. He also reiterated the command’s commitment to the safety of residents and travelers within the state.
“The three suspects are currently being interrogated and will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” Odunlami stated. “The Ondo State Police Command urges the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency.”
NANS Zonal Coordinator for the South-West, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, expressed gratitude to the CP for the prompt response and the command’s efforts in maintaining security. He also pledged NANS’ support in collaborating with the police to combat crime in Ondo State.
This arrest comes amidst other police operations in the region, including the arrest of a woman for human trafficking and the rescue of kidnap victims in neighboring states.
