In a gesture aimed at bolstering humanitarian efforts amidst ongoing economic challenges, members of the House of Representatives have collectively donated N705 million from their salaries to support President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives. This significant contribution, representing a six-month, 50% salary deduction, was announced during an Iftar hosted by the President at the Presidential Villa on Monday night, signalling a united front in addressing the needs of vulnerable Nigerians.
The donation comes at a critical juncture, as the nation grapples with economic adjustments and seeks to mitigate the impact on its most vulnerable citizens. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasised that the financial support is intended to “augment the humanitarian engagements of Mr. President and to support vulnerable people in the country.” This act, he stated, reflects the lawmakers’ commitment to alleviating hardship and demonstrating solidarity with those facing adversity.
“On behalf of the House of Reps, the Hon. Speaker donated the sum of N705,000,000 (Seven Hundred and Five Million Naira), which he said is a six-month fifty per cent deduction from their salaries,” a statement from the presidency detailed, underscoring the tangible nature of their contribution.
The gesture carries a profound human angle. In a nation where economic disparities are stark, such a donation, while symbolic, can offer tangible relief to those struggling to meet basic needs. It reflects an understanding of the lived realities of many Nigerians, who face daily challenges exacerbated by economic fluctuations. As citizens, we often look to our elected officials to demonstrate empathy and take concrete steps to address pressing social issues.

“We are gathered here this evening not as adversaries in a contest for power, but as partners in the noble task of nation-building,” Vice President Kashim Shettima remarked, highlighting the spirit of unity that underpinned the event. He called upon the National Assembly leaders to prioritise national development over political divisions, emphasising the importance of “a shared commitment to progress.”
Shettima also reassured Nigerians that the government’s economic policies are beginning to yield results. “The economy has turned the corner. We are now on the path to sustained economic growth, and with perseverance, we will create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” he stated. However, this optimism is tempered by the lived experiences of many who are still navigating the immediate impacts of economic adjustments. It is crucial for the government to ensure that the benefits of these policies are felt across all segments of society, not just in macroeconomic indicators.
The Speaker’s call for prayers for the nation’s economy and security reflects a broader sentiment among Nigerians. As reported by the World Bank, Nigeria’s poverty rate remains a significant concern, with millions living below the poverty line. Addressing these challenges requires not only economic policies but also a collective effort from all stakeholders.
“In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, you have not just a leader you can trust, but a leader who trusts you,” Shettima added, reinforcing the importance of mutual respect and collaboration between the executive and legislative branches. He urged leaders to govern with “empathy, fairness, and justice,” reminding them of the “sacred trust of the Nigerian people.”
This donation, while significant, raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such efforts. Addressing the root causes of poverty and vulnerability requires systemic changes and sustained policy interventions. Nevertheless, the lawmakers’ gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for collective action in times of need.
