A company in Canada, announced that they began selling sweaters made of 100% human hair.
The creators of #TheGaySweater, said that it is the only element that can be described as “so gay” because it is made entirely of human hair donated by members of the LGBT community.
The Gay Sweater Project, led by the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, aims to spread the message that words like “gay” must not be used only in a derogatory way.
The initiative is part of the center’s mission to combat harassment and discrimination in schools and youth communities.
The word “gay” has had a long and tumultuous history. It entered the English language sometime in the 15th century with the meaning of “bright colors” or “happy.”
It then became a description of sexuality, before the derogatory use of the term began in the 1970s. The gay sweater has different shades of brown, blonde and black hair.
It is completed with colored buttons, which is also made with human hair. Users have described the sweater as “incredibly itchy” and “hot but not too hot.”
