Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo has been appointed by the federal government as the Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAID, Prof. Ibrahim A. Njodi presented the letter of appointment to the Oba at his palace in Oyo during a courtesy call on Wednesday.
The VC who is accompanied by principal officials of the institution briefed the Chancellor on the state of things in the institution. He noted that the school which took off in 1976 with just about 300 students in three faculties now has over 40 thousand undergraduate, postgraduate and non-regular students in eleven Faculties, a College of Medical Sciences and the Seven specialized research and development centres in the university.
He also informed the Oba that there are more than three thousand senior and junior academic and non-academic staff in the institution. He also noted that there is a cordial relationship among management, staff and students of the institution despite the security challenges in the North-East.
Prof Njodi also briefed the chancellor on the coming 40th anniversary of the institution and the 22nd convocation ceremony which will be held towards the end of the year.
Responding, Oba (Dr) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III thanked the Federal Government for finding him worthy of being the Chancellor to the University of Maiduguri and promised to do his best to ensure the university is globally recognized in all its field of human endeavours. He said university administration is not new to him as he has been the founding Chancellor of Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto (1980 -1992).
