In a show of solidarity with the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a directive to all its zonal coordinators and chairpersons to mobilize members for the industrial action.
The letter, signed by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, was dispatched on Monday night, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The directive follows the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other executives during a protest in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, and the broader labor issues in Imo State.
The letter stated, “The Nigeria Labour Congress at a Joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC directed all affiliate unions to commence withdrawal of services with effect from 12 midnight today, November 13, 2023. As an affiliate of NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.”
The directive further emphasized the need for zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons to mobilize ASUU members promptly, reinforcing the collective strength of workers in the face of perceived injustices.
The nationwide strike, initiated by the NLC and TUC, is aimed at addressing not only the assault on Joe Ajaero but also broader labor issues affecting workers in Imo State.
