Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, and the winner of Big Brother Naija season 7, has retracted her previous remarks on abortion, acknowledging that her earlier statement was an error.
The reality TV star had previously sparked a wave of controversy after suggesting during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo that almost all women had undergone an abortion at least once or twice.
In a recent Instagram post, Phyna openly addressed the matter, expressing regret for her previous statements and emphasizing her stance against abortion, particularly given the risks associated with illegal procedures in certain regions.
“Good day to all and sundry,” Phyna began. “I am Josephine Otabor, also known as Phyna, and I am writing this statement to address the issues concerning an interview I did months ago where I talked about a very sensitive topic and inaccurately suggested that ‘all’ women have engaged in it.”
Phyna clarified her position further, stating, “I will never encourage abortion, especially not in this part of the world, where it can pose a great threat to the life of the person with the illegal and unhealthy procedures that surround it.”
Expressing remorse for any misunderstanding caused by her earlier comments, Phyna acknowledged her own responsibility, saying, “I admit that I was being too expressive in the heat of the interview, hence my assertions. I will reiterate that abortion is not a thing I stand for, and I should not be seen in that light. I admit to all mistakes made.”
The reality TV star further revealed her commitment to working with gender-based organizations and NGOs to raise awareness and educate on abortion and other critical issues impacting the well-being of the girl child.
“In addition, I’m currently working with gender-based organisations and NGOs to provide sensitization, education about abortion and other societal issues prone to the girl child,” she said.
“I want to use this medium to thank my fans, friends and family for their constant love and support, I do not intend to let you down.”
