Lagos residents have a unique opportunity to shape the future of Ibeju-Lekki. From February 26th to March 4th, the Lagos State Government is opening the draft Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan (2024-2044) for public review. This crucial step invites residents and stakeholders to actively participate in the development of their community for the next two decades. I believe this direct engagement is vital, as it ensures that the plan reflects the actual needs and aspirations of the people who will live and work in Ibeju-Lekki.
This 20-year development framework focuses on key areas like infrastructure, land use, and urban planning. It’s a chance for residents to directly influence the direction of their community’s growth. As Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, stated, “It is imperative to know that public inspection of the draft Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan is in tandem with the state’s culture of citizens’ participation and international best practices in the preparation of physical development plans.” This commitment to public involvement underscores the government’s recognition that successful urban planning requires collaboration between officials and the community.
The review period, originally reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as extending to April 4th, has been clarified to end on March 4th. This correction emphasizes the importance of accurate reporting and allows residents to plan their participation accordingly. The draft plan will be available for inspection at several designated locations across the state, including the Secretariat in Alausa, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permits Authority in GRA, Ikeja. These accessible locations aim to maximise public participation.
The final Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan will be presented on April 11th at the Lekki Local Council Development Area Hall. This event will mark the official adoption of the plan, incorporating the feedback received during the public review. The plan will then serve as a roadmap for Ibeju-Lekki’s development, guiding sustainable growth and structured urban expansion.

The striking thing about this initiative is the emphasis on inclusivity. The government is not just presenting a plan; they’re actively seeking input. This is more than just a formality; it’s a genuine attempt to create a city plan that truly serves the community. “This is the process that the state government adopts to produce desirable outcomes and bring about community ownership and seamless implementation of our physical development plans,” Dr. Olumide added. This sentiment highlights the long-term vision behind the public review process.
This process is not just about buildings and roads; it’s about building a community. It’s about creating a place where people can live, work, and thrive. By participating in the public review, residents of Ibeju-Lekki can play a vital role in shaping their future. It’s an opportunity to leave a lasting impact on their community, ensuring that the development reflects their needs and aspirations. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and contribute to the future of Ibeju-Lekki.
