Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari‘s reaction to the killing of Shiite muslims under the leader of Sheikh Ibrahim El-zakzaky in Zaria.
The group had clashed with the Nigerian army over right of way in Kaduna, leading to the death of hundreds.
“As far as I am concerned, the Zaria killing is a national disaster. I expected the President to have declared a national mourning, especially because of the number of people that lost their lives,” Bishop Kukah said in a Punch interview.
“There is no way the President would not be held responsible because the buck stops at his table,” Bishop Kukah said.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) recently published a damning report regarding the evidence of mass graves in Zaria. It estimated that at least 300 people were killed in the massacre and dumped in the graves by military men.
