The Uruguayan resigned from his post as manager of Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in September and has been out of work since. But the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder was named Bordeaux boss on Saturday.
The French club sacked Jocelyn Gourvennec this week after a poor run of results, Poyet appointment as Bordeaux manager is his sixth as a first-team manager, having previously worked at Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland, AEK Athens, Real Betis and Shanghai Shenhua.
The news comes on the heels of Bordeaux’s 1-0 win over Nantes earlier in the day, the result moved them up to 11th in the table.
