The Federal Government has constituted the governing councils for 111 federal tertiary institutions in the country. The list of appointed council members was released on Saturday by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Okay.ng had reported how the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to strike over the non-constitution of governing councils for universities months after they were dissolved. ASUU insists that the dissolution is “illegal” and has paved the way for “illegalities” in the university system.
The inauguration and retreat of the councils will take place on May 30 and 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission in Abuja. The councils comprise technocrats, politicians, and traditional rulers who will oversee the management of 50 universities, 37 polytechnics, and 24 colleges of education.
Notable appointees include former INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega, who will chair the Governing Council of Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, and former NUC Executive Secretary Peter Okebukola, who will chair the council of University of Port Harcourt. Additionally, Yayale Ahmed, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, will chair the council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.
