The livelihoods of hundreds of artisans and traders in Gandun Albasa, a key furniture production area near the Kano Trade Fair Complex, have been severely impacted by a Monday night fire. The blaze, reportedly sparked by an electrical issue following power restoration around 10:00 pm, destroyed four workshops, okay.ng reports.
Two shops containing foam materials were completely razed, and two others holding finished furniture suffered extensive damage. Mu’azu Inuwa Indabawa, a shop owner who estimated his losses in the millions of naira, acknowledged the Kano State Fire Service’s crucial role in preventing further destruction.
The fire consumed the building that housed Hausawa Best Furniture, Shamsu Sabiu Isa Furniture, Shuaibu Anamu Best Furniture, and Indabawa Furniture, including a shop filled with unsalvageable foam. Fortunately, a nearby multi-story building with more furniture and several adjoining shops were not affected.
This incident follows a recent report from the Kano State Fire Service, which stated they saved six lives and property valued at N1.2 billion in January 2025.
