A fire outbreak at the Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi market in Kano has consumed a vast number of trading stalls, leading to the loss of goods believed to be worth millions of Naira.
One trader, Auwal Yusuf told newsmen that the fire started at about 11pm on Friday and consumed many shops around the shoes, chemical and provisions sections of the market.
A Daily Trust reporter who visited the market around 6am on Saturday, stated that men of the Kano state fire service were still battling to put out the fire which was spreading to other sections of the market at the time.
Fire fighting vehicles from private companies were thereafter deployed to the market to join the state fire service officials in arresting the raging inferno.
Traders were seen evacuating the remains of their items and goods unaffected by the fire.
Security was beefed up in and around the market to prevent hoodlums from looting traders’ properties.
Policemen, civil defense personel and members of vigilante group were stationed at various entrances to the market.
