Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has issued a public apology following an incident where he was recorded assaulting a Bolt driver who had delivered a package to him.
In a statement released on Monday, Ikwechegh admitted that his actions did not meet the standards expected of a public official and expressed deep regret for the incident.
The lawmaker acknowledged the harm caused to the driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, and extended his apologies to his constituents and the public at large.
“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry,” Ikwechegh stated.
The apology followed widespread condemnation after a video went viral on Monday showing Ikwechegh slapping and insulting Abuwatseya at his residence in Maitama, Abuja. The incident reportedly escalated after the driver asked Ikwechegh to collect a snail delivery himself. In the video, Ikwechegh threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.
In his apology, Ikwechegh also confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police, pledging support for their investigation and upholding accountability.
“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable,” he added.
The lawmaker praised the swift condemnation of his actions by his party and the police, noting that he was taking steps to address the underlying issues that led to the incident. He revealed plans to undergo professional counselling and engage in community service focused on respect, empathy, and understanding.
Ikwechegh also called on Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect and tolerance.
The incident has drawn significant public criticism, with many calling for accountability.
The police, in a statement, confirmed that Ikwechegh was undergoing questioning at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters and expressed disappointment over his mention of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, during the confrontation with the driver.
Ikwechegh has committed to ensuring that such behaviour does not happen again, and the police investigation into the matter continues.
