Ex- Arsenal star and Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo and his wife, Amara, have revealed how she saved his heart from failing.

He told Daily Mail UK, that his wife saved his life by insisting he went for a heart check up.

Kanu had his first heart surgery in 1996 after a routine health examination at Inter Milan revealed a heart valve abnormality.

Amara, 30, recounted that her husband’s pounding heartbeat kept her awake, adding that she knew from the way it pounded that something was not quite right.

According to her, she insisted he went for a medical check up immediately.

She said, “His heartbeat sounded much louder than normal. I was listening to his chest and it sounded odd.”

Kanu added, “She was saying I should go for a check-up so I took her advice.”

Fortunately, Amara was right, as doctors detected further damage to his heart and immediately suggested he had another operation.

His wife added, “It was the same faulty valve. It was like a ticking time bomb. It’s just one of those things we were lucky to find out.”

After the second surgery, which Amara detected, she nursed Kanu back to health.

Kanu concluded by saying, “Now I know that being fit and strong doesn’t make your heart 100%.”
