Finally, the president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta is a free man after the international criminal court terminated crimes against humanity charges against him.
On statement released to media houses , the three judges presiding the case against Uhuru Kenyatta said “Noting the persecution withdrawal of charges against Mr. Kenyatta, the chambers decided to terminate the proceeding in this case and to vacate the summons to appear against him”.
But the three judges vowed that the court will punish those who may have meddled or influenced the witnesses of the court.
December last year, the three judges ordered prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to either proceed the case against Mr. Uhuru or withdraw charges with a threat to terminate if she did not act.
In 2010, ICC indicted six Kenyans for committing crimes during 2007 /2008 post election violence that claimed more than 1,000 lives and displacing more 500,000 people from their homes.
So far, the court has acquitted four of the six charged due to lack of evidence. The four are, Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta the current president of Kenya, Francis Mathaura former head of public service, former police commissioner Major General Hussein Ali and former industrialization minister Henry Kosgey .
The other two facing case in the Hague based court are William Ruto ,the current Deputy President of Kenya and Journalist Arap Sang despite maintaining their innocence
