The Independent National Electoral Commission has rescheduled the Abuja area council elections slated for March 19.
The election will now hold on April 9, the commission said.
This was disclosed in an address by the resident electoral commissioner INEC-FCT, Jacob Jatau, at an emergency meeting with concerned parties on Monday 14th at the INEC conference hall.
Mr. Jatau in the address revealed that the shift in the election date was as a result of shortage of ad-hoc workers.
His address: “Over a period of time, the commission has collaborated well with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).
“However, there is a challenge currently as the commission has not been able to get the required number of corps members for the elections scheduled for March 19, 2016.
“Given this challenge, the commission began consultations with the authorities of the University of Abuja to balance the required number of ad-hoc workers. By today that number was received but it is not possible to adequately train and deploy them for the exercise.
“In the light of this development therefore, the commission has decided to shift the elections by three weeks. The new date for the Area Councils elections in the FCT is April 9th, 2016.”
