The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their nationwide strike for a period of one week.
The decision was announced by TUC President Festus Osifo on Tuesday in Abuja following a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting of both unions.
A detailed communique is expected to be released shortly.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, June 3, 2024, was initiated due to a deadlock in negotiations between the organised labour and the Federal Government over a new minimum wage and the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
The labour unions are demanding a minimum wage of ₦494,000, while the government has proposed ₦60,000.
The strike had a significant impact on critical sectors of the economy, leading to the closure of schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports.
Additionally, the national power grid was shut down, resulting in a nationwide blackout.
The suspension of the strike provides a temporary reprieve and allows for further negotiations between the labour unions and the government.
