The Kogi State Government has imposed an indefinite ban on all rallies and public gatherings deemed capable of disrupting public peace, Okay.ng reports.
The announcement was made on Monday by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, who cited intelligence reports indicating planned violent protests under the guise of political and religious agitations.
Fanwo said the government had taken the proactive step to prevent a breakdown of law and order across the state, following recent unrest in various communities.
“With recent incidents in various local government areas, including clashes in communities and tensions rising due to planned rallies, the government has deemed it necessary to implement stricter security measures,” he stated.
As part of the new measures, the government also suspended all fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area following deadly clashes that recently claimed lives. Security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore calm and enforce the directive.
In addition, Fanwo disclosed that communal tensions between Ika-Odele and Ika Ochala in Ankpa Local Government Area had prompted further deployment of security personnel to prevent an escalation of violence.
“The ban on rallies and public gatherings applies to all individuals, groups, or organizations within the state until further notice,” Fanwo said, stressing that while the government recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to express themselves, security must take precedence.
The government also directed that any convoy of security personnel entering the state must obtain prior clearance from the relevant state commands. This is to curb unauthorized movement and ensure that all security operatives are properly accredited.
To ensure the enforcement of these measures, the State Security Adviser has been directed to collaborate with all security agencies to maintain vigilance and high alert across the state.
“The Chief Servant of Kogi State is leading efforts to protect lives and property,” Fanwo added. “Residents are urged to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security authorities.”
He reaffirmed that any attempt to undermine the peace and stability of Kogi State would be met with the full weight of the law.
