Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state.
Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner of environment and water resources, made this announcement in a 21-second video posted on the X handle of Lagos State Environmental Update.
“Our governor and the state executive council have approved the reintroduction of the monthly sanitation exercise in Lagos State, beginning from this month,” Wahab said in Yoruba.
“The governor will personally make the announcement.”
The sanitation exercise, which was previously held between 7 am and 10 am on the last Saturday of every month, was cancelled in November 2016.
At that time, Steve Ayorinde, then commissioner of information, explained that the decision was taken at the executive council meeting, citing Lagos’ status as a megacity and the inappropriateness of restricting movement for three hours.
Ayorinde also mentioned that the cancellation was approved to allow for a robust review of the environmental laws and procedures in the state to meet present-day challenges and promote a clean and healthy environment.
