The Lagos State Government has initiated the permanent removal of illegal street gates that have been closed to traffic around the Lekki Phase 1 area.
This action follows an ultimatum issued by the government to owners of gated streets in Lekki, directing them to open the gates for traffic or face consequences.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on his official Twitter handle on Saturday that the removal of these illegal gates is in response to the persistent traffic congestion experienced by residents traveling through Lekki.
According to the Commissioner, the mounting of gates indiscriminately and the proliferation of such structures have not only defaced the aesthetics of the environment but have also contributed to unnecessary traffic on major roads.
The Lagos State Government, through the enforcement team of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, has commenced the removal of permanently closed illegal gates around the Lekki 1 axis.
Among the gates already removed are those located on Sir Rufus Foluso Giwa Road, Theophilus Oji Road, Osaro Isokpan Road, Abike Sulaiman Road, Ben Okagbue MBA Road, Olubunmi Rotimi Road, Olanrewaju Ninalowo Road, Dele Adedeji Road, Abayomi Sonuga Road, Siji Soetan, and Rasheed Alaba Williams Roads.
“I, therefore, urged all resident associations across the state that have such gates in their estates or communities and always put them under permanent lock and keys to remove them voluntarily or face sanctions,” he said.
