The funeral rites for the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, are set to take place today at 4:00 pm, with his remains being interred at his Aliwo family compound in accordance with Islamic customs, Okay.ng gathered.
The prayers will be led by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Ajigbotomokekere, alongside other clerics from within and outside Ibadanland.
Oba Balogun, who passed away late Thursday at the age of 81 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, had left an indelible mark on Ibadan’s history and beyond.
Confirming his demise, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and his Personal Assistant, Media, Oladele Ogunsola, expressed sorrow over the loss of the revered monarch.
Describing Oba Balogun as an epitome of knowledge and leadership, Ogunsola shared a poignant reflection on his interactions with the late monarch.
“The late Olubadan was the first most educated to have emerged as Ibadan monarch, a British-trained PhD holder, a former university lecturer, former member of the management staff of Shell British Petroleum, former governorship candidate of the defunct Nigeria People’s Party (NPP), former Senator, and a successful businessman,” he wrote on Facebook.
Despite his passing, Oba Balogun remained engaged in his duties until his last days, presiding over the Olubadan Advisory Council’s meeting and issuing instructions for crucial deliberations.
His legacy endures through his wives, children, and grandchildren, as well as the impactful contributions he made to Ibadan’s cultural heritage and development.
