The Association of Raw Gin Producers of Nigeria (ARGPON) has launched a significant initiative to clean up the local alcoholic drinks industry. This move comes amidst growing concerns about the health and safety of consumers and aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to establish a national policy on alcohol sales and distribution.
“Our goal is to reorient distillers and dealers on the need to embrace best global practices and eliminate unwholesome acts within the industry,” stated Adebisi Adekanye, National Chairman of ARGPON, in a press release issued on Wednesday.
The association, guided by the 1970 Decree No. 54 and the 2006 Control of Distillation and Spirit Drink Regulation, aims vo modernise production processes and ensure the quality and safety of locally produced gin, commonly known as “ogogoro.”
“It is unacceptable that the good intentions of the government in legalizing local gin are being defeated by subpar production methods,” Adekanye emphasized. “We believe that by embracing modern technologies and improving production quality, we can not only enhance consumer safety but also contribute significantly to job creation and boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.”
ARGPON is collaborating with the Federal Industrial Institute of Research to develop innovative distilling cones that promise to increase production output by over 1,000 per cent while eliminating the use of rusty drums, a common and hazardous practice in traditional production. This shift towards modern methods will not only improve the quality of the final product but also reduce the environmental impact and enhance the overall safety of the production process.

To ensure compliance, ARGPON will be conducting a comprehensive registration drive for all rural gin producers and dealers across the country. This process will involve a thorough assessment of their production systems and product quality to ensure adherence to approved standards.
“We understand the importance of supporting the livelihoods of local producers,” stated Anthony Okoro, Board Secretary of ARGPON. “This initiative is not about stifling the industry but about ensuring its sustainability and growth through responsible and ethical practices.”
ARGPON has urged all operators to visit their website or national secretariat in Lagos for further information regarding the registration process, which is set to commence in the first week of February.
