President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s government, which will now serve in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. This development comes after the recent snap election resulted in a political stalemate, with no clear majority in the National Assembly.
The outgoing government will handle daily affairs until a successor is appointed, with Macron urging “republican forces” to work together to build unity and form a governing coalition. The president’s allies suffered a significant defeat in the July 7 parliamentary election, leading to the current political impasse.
The New Popular Front (NFP) alliance, comprising Socialists, Communists, Greens, and the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI), secured the most seats in the lower house with 193 out of 577. However, infighting within the alliance has hindered efforts to agree on a consensus candidate for prime minister.
The search for a new prime minister continues, with Macron’s government seeking a candidate who can survive a confidence vote in parliament. The political uncertainty is likely to persist until a new government is formed, with the country’s future direction hanging in the balance.
