Renowned football manager Jose Mourinho has thrown his support behind the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final clash against Cote d’Ivoire, expressing his desire to see them emerge victorious in the tournament.
In an exclusive chat with FIVE UK, Mourinho revealed his backing for the Nigerian team, citing his close relationship with Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Nigeria is set to face the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, in the highly anticipated final of the 34th edition of AFCON at the Olympic Stadium, Ebimpe, Abidjan, on Sunday.
Mourinho, known for his successful stints at top clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United, highlighted Peseiro as his “best friend” in football, emphasizing their shared history and camaraderie.
“My best friend in football is in the final. The Nigerian coach is my best friend — he grew up with me,” Mourinho disclosed.
“We studied together. We went to the university at the same time. We spent five years together every day. We left at the same time. He is probably my biggest friend in football. Jose, my big friend. It will be a huge opportunity for him to make history. Never has a Portuguese coach won the AFCON.”
The AFCON final between Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire is scheduled to kick off at 9 pm, promising a thrilling encounter as both teams vie for continental glory.
