Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd), has taken decisive action by ordering a nationwide crackdown on the sale and use of nitrous oxide, popularly known as “laughing gas.”
This move comes in response to the increasing recreational use of the gas, which has raised concerns about its potential for abuse.
Nitrous oxide, also referred to as “N20,” is a colorless gas commonly utilized by dentists and medical professionals for sedation and pain relief during minor medical procedures.
However, its recreational use has become a growing trend among certain individuals, prompting the NDLEA to intervene.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the agency, emphasized that the NDLEA would not hesitate to take punitive measures against anyone found in possession of the substance.
The statement revealed the reasons behind the clampdown on nitrous oxide and shed light on the dangers associated with its misuse.
“The NDLEA CEO has directed all commands and formations of the agency to immediately crack down on the illegal sale and use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, due to its abuse by those who indulge in recreational activities,” Babafemi stated.
He further added, “The gas is rapidly gaining popularity as a sought-after drug among young party-goers and fun-seekers in Nigeria. It is often transferred from its containers into balloons, which are then inhaled.”
The decision to take action against those involved in the illicit sale and use of nitrous oxide was based on a comprehensive analysis of its effects on abusers.
These effects include dizziness, disorientation, headaches, lightheadedness, fainting spells, hallucinations, unconsciousness, suffocation due to lack of oxygen, and various neurological complications, particularly psychiatric symptoms.
The NDLEA emphasized that until additional measures are implemented in consultation with relevant stakeholders, particularly the Federal Ministry of Health, to address this menace, it will not hesitate to use strict measures against anyone, regardless of their social status, engaged in the illegal sale or use of nitrous oxide. This action is essential for the protection of public health.
Brigadier General Buba Marwa urged parents, guardians, and other concerned individuals to remain vigilant, be aware of the risks associated with nitrous oxide, and warn young people against experimenting with or abusing the substance.
He highlighted the severe threats that the gas poses to mental and overall well-being, urging the collective effort of all stakeholders to combat this emerging issue.
