Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface has been dealt a blow as he is ruled out of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire due to an injury sustained during a training session in Abu Dhabi.
The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen striker was unable to participate in the Super Eagles’ recent friendlies against Al Gharib and Guinea.
The setback deals a blow to Nigeria’s attacking options, leaving Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Real Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq as the only fit strikers in the squad.
Another striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, is also battling fitness issues and might be unavailable for the AFCON tournament.
Boniface, who made his debut for the Super Eagles in September against Sao Tome and Principe, has featured five times for the three-time African champions.
Despite his injury, Boniface expressed his support for the team, sharing a goodwill message on social media. On Instagram, he posted, “Good luck, guys… Wish you all the best at AFCON.”
Nigeria is preparing for the AFCON, which is scheduled to kick off on January 13, 2024.
