Similar to the House of Representatives, the Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, exercising its constitutional authority under the amended 1999 Constitution. This approval empowers President Tinubu to implement emergency measures, with a requirement to review the situation at any time, but no later than six months.
In line with constitutional provisions, the National Assembly has also formed a joint committee comprising members from both chambers to oversee the administration of Rivers State during the emergency period.
Furthermore, the Senate has decided to create a mediation committee composed of prominent Nigerians to facilitate the resolution of the political crisis in the state.
