Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state on Tuesday unveiled a new Obafemi Awolowo statue in Ikeja, to celebrate his contribution to the liberation of Nigeria.
The new statue is located on Obafemi Awolowo Way by the Lagos Television (LTV) junction in Ikeja.
The statue is said to have been erected to serve as a constant reminder of the need to value the contributions of the heroes past.

Speaking at the unveiling, the governor said the story of Nigeria’s Independence 57 years ago is incomplete without extolling the contributions of late Obafemi Awolowo
According to him, the first premier of the western region and lawmaker was a leading voice for the country’s liberation.
Gov. Ambode added that Awolowo’s commitment to the growth of a united Nigeria was demonstrated throughout his lifetime
”Baba Awolowo remained a shining point during his lifetime because of his emphasis on the citizens’ welfare
“A new generation like us need to rise up to the principles he lived for especially for the Yoruba people” he added.
