In the early hours of Monday, a group of armed men attacked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, the capital of Imo State in Nigeria. The gunmen opened fire on the building and set fire to a section of it, causing significant damage.
Okay.ng gathered that the attackers were engaged in a gunfight with security forces, and several people were injured in the exchange of gunfire. Three of the attackers, including their leader, were killed in the shootout.

The police were able to recover seven vehicles that were used by the attackers, along with seven AK47 and pump action rifles. Many of the gunmen managed to escape from the scene, but some of them were believed to have been injured. One police vehicle was also set on fire by the attackers.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abbatam, confirmed the attack to Okay.ng on the INEC office and promised to provide additional details about the incident later.
