The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Plateau State has on Wednesday adopted the method of indirect primaries which will produce candidates of the party ahead of the 2019 General elections.
The State working committee of the Party as well as stakeholders, Elders Lawmakers and Local Government chairmen rising from their meeting held at Yelwa Club, Jos yesterday adopted the indirect primaries for Plateau state.
The meeting of the party which was under the leadership of the APC chairman in the State Hon. Let Dabang was also attended by the Deputy Governor of Plateau State Prof. Sonny Tyoden who represent the Governor who had travelled to China with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The decision for the adoption of indirect primaries for the APC during the meeting follows a motion moved by the Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly Rt. Hon.John Clark Dabwan and seconded by the APC chairman of Jos East Local government Hon. Azi Ajiji Pate while all the members of the working committee in attendance unanimously adopted the motion.
The Deputy Governor of Plateau State Prof. Sonny Tyoden while speaking to Journalists after the meeting said the decision for the indirect primaries for the state is timely looking at the security challenges of the state.
He also disclosed that the direct primaries will be costly as well take time to collect data for all members of the party in the state, saying most state don’t have available data for members.
On his Part chairman of the Party in the state Hon. Dabang said the meeting was a follow up to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC during which, he said, states were given three options on how they could conduct primary elections.
“We were given three options which include direct voting, indirect (delegate) system and consensus voting. And it is based on that that we in Plateau have decided to come together as critical stakeholders to endorse the option we have chosen.”
He said the decision for Indirect primaries in Plateau state was based on the critical Security consideration in the state.
“Direct primaries involved a large number of members, but we decided to go for indirect primaries to be able to manage the crowd looking at the Plateau State challenge”.
Dabang who double as the APC North Central Chairman of chairmen pledge that the APC as party in the state will provide a level playing ground for all Aspirant to be treated equally.
Amongst those who attended the meeting to include Former Deputy Governor of Plateau State Ambassador Ignatius Longjan, Ambassador Yahaya Kwande, SSG Plateau State Hon. Rufus Bature, Deputy Speaker of Plateau House House Assembly Hon. Yipmong Sale, Senator Davou Zang and Chairman of Riyom LGC Hon. Emmanuel Danboyi amongst other stakeholders.
