A group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, has proposed a six-year single tenure for the President and state governors.
They also suggested creating offices for two Vice Presidents, one from the Southern region and one from the Northern region, with the first VP serving as a succession VP and the second VP overseeing the economy.
Additionally, they proposed amending the Electoral Act 2022 to hold all governorship elections on the same day. This proposal revives a previously discussed idea that gained support from opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi after the 2023 presidential election.
However, similar bills for a single term for political office holders were rejected by both the Senate and House of Representatives in the past. The proposed amendments aim to improve governance in the country.
