A bill proposing the creation of Tiga State from Kano State has been introduced in the Senate. Sponsored by Senator Kawu Sulaiman AbdulRahman (Kano South), the bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024,” seeks to alter the constitution to create a new state.
Kano State, with 44 local government areas, is one of the states with the highest voting population in Nigeria. The bill was listed for first reading on Wednesday but was adjourned to Thursday due to the death of a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi.
If approved, Tiga State would be the eighth state in the North West geopolitical zone, which already has the highest number of states in the country. The move comes as there are also agitations for an additional state in the South East region.
