Seplat Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company, has successfully concluded the first phase of its comprehensive training programme for journalists and media practitioners in Nigeria.
This initial phase encompassed thirty-seven (37) energy and judiciary correspondents and editors.
Organised in collaboration with Channels Academy, the Seplat Energy media training programme aims to enhance reporting and editing skills in the media, while promoting innovation and technological progress in journalism.
The trainees received in-depth education beyond core energy and judiciary reporting. They explored the intersections of law and energy, including regulatory frameworks, major legal cases, environmental laws, ethical considerations, and the importance of media objectivity.
Additionally, the programme covered modules on investigative reporting techniques, advanced research methods, using public records, interviewing techniques, data journalism in judicial and energy reporting, analysis of energy sector developments, and collaborative reporting projects with story ideas development.
Participants gained insights into legal challenges in energy reporting, such as understanding defamation and libel, navigating legal hurdles, and anticipating future legal challenges. The training also examined the future of energy and law, with a focus on emerging trends and industry shifts.
Media professionals from various print, electronic, and online platforms attended the training.
Mrs. Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, expressed gratitude to the media professionals, resource persons, and Channels Academy for their dedication to the programme’s success.
Represented by Mr. Stanley Opara, Manager of Corporate Communications at Seplat Energy, Mrs. Afe reiterated Seplat Energy’s commitment to building capacity in the media and promoting best practices in the industry.
“At Seplat Energy, we see the media as a critical stakeholder, and the best we can do to support the industry’s development is to encourage excellence. We believe in value creation and retention for all our stakeholders, and today, we are honoured to contribute to the advancement of the media in Nigeria,” Mr. Opara stated.
Responding to the training initiative, media professionals from the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) and the National Association of Judicial Correspondents (NAJUC) thanked Seplat Energy for the opportunity and for driving excellence in the media space.
They described the programme as timely and well-thought-out, urging other corporate organisations in the country to emulate Seplat Energy’s efforts to grow the Nigerian media industry and enhance its capacity.
