Renowned Nigerian artiste Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, recently shared her daring escapade in a candid conversation with Elle magazine.
The Grammy award-winning singer, celebrated for her soulful voice and remarkable achievements, disclosed that her most perilous adventure involved jumping out of an airplane in a heart-pounding skydiving experience.
In the interview, Tems vividly recounted the adrenaline rush and second thoughts that accompanied her leap into the unknown. “The most dangerous thing I’ve ever done is jump out of a plane. I don’t even know how high, but I went skydiving once. And I think for a second I was like, ‘Am I dying? I don’t know who sent me to do this. I don’t know why I decided to do this but here I am falling,” she admitted.
Tems attributed her daring feat to a persuasive uncle who convinced her and her cousins to take the plunge. Initially enticed by the thrill of being a daredevil, she found herself questioning the decision as she ascended into the skies. “My uncle convinced me and my cousins to jump. I was like, ‘Wow! So cool. Daredevil.’ And then we got into the plane, and I was like, I will just stay in the plane, and they said I can’t. They pushed us out,” she humorously shared.
Beyond her adventurous spirit, Tems has left an indelible mark on the Nigerian music scene, earning accolades and widespread recognition. Her breakthrough moment on the international stage came in 2020 with the release of ‘Essence,’ a collaboration with Wizkid. In February 2023, she clinched her first Grammy, securing the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ award for her contribution to Future’s 2022 hit song ‘Wait for U,’ featuring Drake.
Tems continues to captivate audiences with her unique talent and fearless approach, proving that not only does she conquer the music industry, but she’s also unafraid to take the plunge—literally.
