President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, AbdulRasheed Bawa, from office indefinitely.
The move comes in response to “weighty allegations” of abuse of office against Bawa and aims to facilitate a thorough investigation into his conduct while in office.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, President Tinubu approved the indefinite suspension of AbdulRasheed Bawa, CON, as the Chairman of the EFCC, in order to ensure a proper investigation into the allegations made against him.
Bawa has been instructed to immediately hand over the reins of the Commission to the Director of Operations, who will oversee the functioning of the Chairman’s office during the course of the investigation.
The statement reads, “President Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension from office of AbdulRasheed Bawa, CON, as the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office. This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
“Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately handover the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
