Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party, has congratulated Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, on his victory at the 2023 presidential election.
Sunak made this known in a tweet on Wednesday night, where he expressed his desire to work with Tinubu and strengthen the bilateral relationship between the UK and Nigeria.
“The UK-Nigeria relationship remains strong. Congratulations to @officialABAT on his victory in Nigeria,” Mr Sunak said.
“I look forward to working together to grow our security and trade ties, opening up opportunities for businesses and creating prosperity in both our countries,” he added.
Sunak’s tweet came after the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, declared Tinubu the winner of the keenly contested election which held last Saturday.
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), in a contest that saw all three candidates win in 12 states each.
Tinubu secured 8,794,726 million votes, while Abubakar got 6,984,520 million votes and Obi got 6,101,533 million votes.
