The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
The announcement was made during a press briefing on Monday by the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut.
According to Dr. Dangut, a total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 recognized secondary schools across Nigeria. Of these, 1,685,889 candidates, representing 93.39%, have had their results fully processed and released. However, the results of 119,327 candidates, representing 6.61%, are still being processed due to certain issues that are being resolved.
Efforts are ongoing to finalize and release the pending results within days. Dr. Dangut also noted that the examination was administered to candidates from schools in Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, where the Nigerian curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools is in use.
In a notable effort to accommodate all candidates, WAEC reported that 109,115 candidates with varying degrees of special needs registered for the examination. This group included 145 visually challenged candidates, 473 with impaired hearing, 44 who were spastic-cum-mentally challenged, and 38 who were physically challenged. The results for these candidates have also been processed and released alongside those of other candidates.
Out of the total 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the examination, 896,894 were males, while 908,322 were females, representing 49.68% and 50.32% of the candidates, respectively.
Dr. Dangut provided an analysis of the performance statistics, revealing that 1,332,089 candidates, or 73.79%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, whether or not they included English Language and Mathematics. Additionally, 1,301,941 candidates, representing 72.12%, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Among these successful candidates, 48.30% were male, while 51.70% were female.
However, the WAEC boss also highlighted a decline in performance compared to the previous year. The percentage of candidates who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, dropped by 7.69%, from 79.81% in 2023 to 72.12% in 2024.
Unfortunately, the results of 215,267 candidates, representing 11.92% of the total candidates, have been withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. This figure is a decrease from the 16.29% recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates.
Dr. Dangut also mentioned that the results of candidates sponsored by states that are indebted to WAEC will not be released until the outstanding payments are made. He appealed to the concerned states to settle their debts promptly to enable affected schools and candidates to access their results.
In a groundbreaking move, WAEC introduced a new system that allows candidates to receive their digital certificates shortly after results are released. Dr. Dangut stated, “As WASSCE for school candidates 2024 results are being uploaded on the results website, candidates should, after checking their results online, apply for their digital certificate, which will be released 48 hours thereafter.”
Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the WAEC results website, www.waecdirect.org, within the next twelve hours. Certificates will be issued after 48 hours of the request. Additionally, copies of the result listing will be sent to schools shortly.
